Blog 4- Mental Health in Schools
Eating Disorders
I feel that this week I really connected personally with the topic being discussed, mental health. Mental health is a term that is being used more and more in society due to more transparency, awareness and accessibility to help. A couple of years ago, mental health was just a topic talked about in health class for a week or two and nothing more. Now, with the power both positive and negative of social media, it is becoming a more important topic that a majority of people struggle with in different ways. Personally, I have struggled with mental health in the last couple years and have since realized that even before mental health was really talked about openly, I struggled as well but did not realize it at the time. There are so many forms of mental health and for this week’s blog I researched and wrote about eating disorders. So many people including both boys and girls struggle with eating disorders. Due to social media, there has been an increase in eating disorders because online there are so many different examples of what people “should look like”. Although we are told frequently that we should not compare ourselves to other people because all bodies are different, it can be very difficult when you are constantly seeing people with the same body type being put on display. As educators it is important to be aware of our students, changes in their behavior, signs of them struggling, etc. Educators are like “First Responders”(Anderson, 2016) we are the people who need to be able to help our students as soon as physically possible when they are struggling especially when that struggle is mental. Below is my slide with information regarding the three most common disorders.
