Blog 10- Final Post

Image
Final Blog Post- My Thoughts and Reflection With only a few days left in the semester, I was excited to film this vlog and be able to talk about some of the things that impacted me the most, stood out to me and ideas that I hope to implement into my classroom. This class truly was a great way to set a foundation in education for me and opened my eyes to so many issues that take place in classrooms and schools around the country. Many of these issues I had a little but of previous knowledge but having so many different resources available to me throughout the modules I was able to expand my knowledge greatly. Without further ado, I will let you watch my vlog for this week’s final blog post! Hope you enjoy!

Blog 9- Home/School Connection

Bridging the Gap Between Home and the Classroom [Parent-Teacher Communication Be the Difference]. (2012). https://mariadismondy.com/2012/08/28/parent-teacher-communication/ Part One Creating a relationship with parents is one of the most important but overlooked aspects of becoming an educator. At the elementary level communication between the educator and parent/guardians is so important and can really improve the level of learning and understanding.  At the Board of Education meeting I attended in Northport, I was able to see first hand the benefits of communication with parents as well as the lack of communication with parents. Luckily this was not my first board meeting that I attended so I knew what to expect of a regular meeting. My dad is a former board member in Northport so I grew up hearing all about the different things that would be discussed and debated at these meetings as well as attending many of them. Now that I am older and entering the education field...

Blog 8- Social Media/Technology

Image
[How Does Social Media Affect Your Health?].(2021). https://foothillsneurology.com/how-does-social-media-affect-our-mental-health/ Social Media and Technology Use in Schools I have grown up using and having access to technology and social media. In school, SMART boards were installed into every single classroom in first grade. In first grade I was five years old. When I was in eighth grade my school district began to give out Chromebooks to every single student. When I was a senior in high school the school district thought that the SMART boards were not good enough anymore and changed to a more advanced board. Even now as a 19 year old college student writing this blog on my computer, technology is essential to learning. It is necessary.  I think that there is a difference between social media use in schools and technology that needs to be acknowledged. I do not think that social media is beneficially in school and in the classroom but I do think that technology is. I ...

Blog 7- Addiction/Use

[untitled no drugs picture].(n.d.) https://www.istockphoto.com/illustrations/drug-free Drugs, Vaping and Marijuana in Schools Drug use and addiction has become quite frequent and common in our country. Especially among young children and young adults. The most popular addiction to have is vaping. Whether it be vaping nicotine, marijuana or just vaporized water, vaping has become extremely popular and “cool” for young people. Vaping is relatively new to the drug use scene and the affects are still not all known. In one vape there is usually the same amount of nicotine as in a pack of cigarettes. And this is not to say that smoking cigarettes are any better because they are not but vaping is just tremendously worse. That is not even taking into account the countless amount of chemicals that are in vapes that so many people do not even realize could be in vapes.  In the video, “Vaping in Schools: Juuling is Popular Among Teens Despite Health Risks”, students and staff in a...

Blog 6- Mindfulness

[Mindfulness-Just Imagine].(n.d.).https://justimagine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/mindfulness-1024x683.jpg Importance of Mindfulness in the Classroom for Both Students and Teachers Mindfulness. Many would think it is a very simple thing to do and implement into their lives. But, for students and teacher it is not a top priority.  Mindfulness is used as a way for people to relax, learn how to calm themselves and just take a minute from themselves to “escape” the real world momentarily. Mindfulness has really gained a lot of popularity in the last couple of years and has been used in school districts and classrooms across the United States in order to help students and teachers.  In this day in age young children are being put under a tremendous amount of pressure to be perfect, get the best grades and to be the best at all times whether its in or out of the classroom. Although these pressures should not be placed on children...

Blog 5- Homelessness and Poverty

Perseverance, Resilience and Struggle of Homeless and Poverty Stricken Students [ untitled image of homeless child].(2023). https://www.salon.com/2016/06/19/criminalizing_poverty_homeless_in_harlem_complain_of_nypd_harassment/ “Since 2008 , the number of homeless students identified by public schools each year has increased by more than 100%, from approximately 680,000 to 1,384,000 students in 2019”   (Cai, 2020) This week’s module readings and documentary was very heartbreaking to learn about. I think for a lot of people we hear about homelessness and poverty on the news but do not realize that people in the same community as us could be struggling. Throughout this module there were two themes that I felt really stuck out to me, Perseverance/Resilience and Suffering. These young teenagers are incredibly brave for being able to survive and live on their own without the support of parents and family. I know how important it is to have family around espe...
